|Welcome to GCCS...|
GLASGOW CATHEDRAL CHORAL SOCIETY was founded in 1938 by Wilfred J. Emery, then Director of Music at Glasgow Cathedral, for the purpose of enriching the musical life of the Cathedral and the City by the performance of a wide variety of sacred music in the ambience for which it was originally intended: a tradition that has been maintained ever since. Although GCCS began its life as an extension of the Cathedral Choir, it is now an entirely separate organisation with its own constitution, committee and finances.
We generally give three concerts each year in Glasgow Cathedral, along with performances in other venues which have included Callander, Lamlash, Langholm, Ayr, St. Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunlop. We have become well known for our traditional New Year’s performance of Handel’s Messiah, which we sing every second year, accompanied by The Scottish Classical Players. Other major works performed in recent years include J.S. Bach’s Magnificat and Cantatas 4 and 140, Beatus Vir by J.C. Bach, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasia, Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Coronation Anthems, Haydn’s Stabat Mater, Nelson Mass and St. Nicholas Mass, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, and Te Deum by both Handel and Haydn.
Glasgow Cathedral Choral Society is a Registered Scottish Charity No. SC002763.
